Have you ever had this feeling like some trend is almost over - at least the hype over Centella is not that huge as it used to be. And then Laneige introduced Cica Sleeping Mask which none of us wanted, but we all needed it! Yes, today I'm going to review Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask thanks to Asian Beauty store - Jolse. Is Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask a new version of one of my favourite sleeping masks? Is it better than different Laneige Sleeping Masks? Do you need to try it?
Couple words about Laneige
2019 is the year of Laneige - Cream Skin series, new products in Water Bank series, Laneige in Europe, Glow Makeup Serum and now Cica Mask! Laneige as a brand is 25 this year! The history of Laneige starts in 1994 since then this South Korean beauty brand grew a lot. The owner of this company is Amore Pacific. Name Laneige comes from French "La Neige" which means snow. Laneige focuses on water and technology. This brand knows how to make your skin hydrated while fighting with other skin problems, but it's not only about skincare! The Two Tone Bar Lipstick used by actress Song Hye-Kyo in a K-drama Descendants of The Sun sold out quickly. Personally, I remember Two Toner Bar Lipstick better from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo with Lee Sung-Kyung. Both actresses made an appearance in Laneige commercials.
Is this a limited version of Laneige Sleeping Mask?
Laneige loves to surprise us with limited versions of products. From what I remember other scents than Berry scent of Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask got released as Limited Edition, same with Mint Choco option released in 2018. Laneige Lavender Water Sleeping Mask had a similar history, so is Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask limited? No, this time it looks like Laneige released a completely new product to a regular sale. I do not expect to see more Cica products from Laneige, but maybe I'm wrong - I hope for that.
Why Centella?
It feels like Centella days of being the most trendy ingredient in skincare won't fade. Gotu Kola is an ingredient widely used in traditional medicine, culinary and beauty industry. The magic of Centella is in triterpenoid saponins like Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid and Asiatic Acid. You won't find pure Centella Asiatic Extract in Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask. Is it bad? No, Laneige focused on saponins to give your skin what's the best in Centella. Gotu Kola itself is an antioxidant with enormous meaning for the skin. This delicate plant can speed up the healing process of the skin. It also helps with inflammation, so it's a win-win situation for sensitive skin and acne-prone skin.
Laneige design?
Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask looks similar to Water Sleeping Mask. The packaging is plastic, but I don't find it problematic. I feel like you can make a collection of Laneige masks because the design doesn't change, only colours are different. There was no other choice for Cica than green packaging - green like a Tiger Grass plant. The jar of Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask comes in a paper box with a specific design. Laneige box design (or brand design in general) is not as tempting as Hanyul. Both brands belong to the same owner, they are different, but it doesn't mean Laneige design is horrible! Laneige design is aesthetic and unique, even if it's not my cup of tea. Still, I find 2019 Laneige creations giving this fresh vibe to the brand. Laneige is growing. The design is changing for the better, even if it keeps a safe standard. Inside the box, we can find a spatula which I appreciate. There's also a manual in Korean, Chinese and English.
Texture and scent?
The texture of Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask feels heavy. It reminds me of an emollient, but it doesn't surprise me. Cica mask has a diverse task than Water Sleeping Mask. Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask focuses on stable and healthful lipid barrier. The scent of white texture is subtle and reminds me of green tea.
Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask
We already know that a base for Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask is Centella. What else can we find in this mask?
Water, Propanediol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Squalane, Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), Glycerin, Panthenol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Butylene Glycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Sorbitan Isostearate, Asiatic Acid, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Aureobasidium Pullulans Ferment, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract, Cymbopogon Martini Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Propanediol is a moisturizing solvent. This ingredient is common in skincare products. I said before that the formula reminds me of emollients. I was right. When we look deeply, we can find Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Squalane, Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Glyceryl Caprylate. They all are emollients, so let's quickly check them all. Cetyl Ethylhexanoate is an oily emollient, but it gives your skin a smooth texture. Cetyl Ethylhexanoate has two different lives in skincare - one as an emollient and second as a stabilizer. Shea Butter, aka Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, is well-known in skincare. Oily skin is not a fan of it, but we can't deny, it's a good moisturizer. Squalane is an ingredient which is most likely to get mistaken. Squalane and Squalene are similar but different. The difference is in the number of bonds. Squalane is one of the safest choices for skin because it naturally occurs in the skin. Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) might scare some people off, but you shouldn't be scared of it. This ingredient is an emollient and a solvent at the same time. Alcohols scare people off, but Cetearyl Alcohol is good alcohol. It keeps your skin happy. Needs more moisture? Then you'll find in this formula Panthenol - a soothing moisturizer. Glycerin is one of the best moisturizers for your skin. There's also Vitamin E.
But where's the main star? When we see "Cica" in a name, we think about Centella, but according to Laneige, the main star here is a... Forest Yeast. Aureobasidium Pullulans Ferment should be the main star here. It's a fungus. The name Forest Yeast is accurate because the base is bean vines from Gotjawal Forest. Aureobasidium Pullulans Ferment is a product of fermentation. The skin doesn't allow bigger molecules to get through the surface of the skin that's why skincare brands use fermentation. This process changes the molecule's size and helps them get through the layers of the skin. According to Amore Pacific, Forest Yeast is better than Madecassoside. Both should be soothing and help with skin regeneration. All the Cica-ingredients in Laneige mask has a very similar purpose.
How does Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask work for me?
The formula reminds me of oil in water emulsion (because if we focus on chemistry, even a body balm can be an emulsion). It's heavier than previous Laneige sleeping masks creations, but I love it. The idea of making a mask that will help restore the skin barrier is excellent. According to Laneige, we can layer this mask up to 3 layers. When your skin barrier is in bad condition - it has some sense. I use a single layer on healthy skin. I didn't have any problems with acne after every use. This mask won't remove your acne, but it'll help you maintain a healthy lipid barrier. The formula itself feels like a moisturizing cream. During the summer, it might be too much for the skin, but it looks ideal for winter. I mixed it with Neogen Real Vita C Powder Lemon (you can read the review on Kherblog of this product) and the structure of this mask, didn't change.
Is Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask better than Laneige Water Sleeping Mask?
Cica Sleeping Mask is not the first sleeping mask made by Laneige. The brand has many years of experience in making sleeping masks - including lip sleeping masks. So what's the difference between Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, Laneige Lavender Water Sleeping Mask, Laneige Time Freeze Sleeping Mask and Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask? Which one should I choose?
Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Root Extract, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Beta-Glucan, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Potassium Alginate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearyl Behenate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide MEA, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Alcohol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, CI 42090
Between Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask and Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, some things aren't the same. Okay, the majority of ingredients are changed. We've got here astonishing collection of humectants and emollients like Glycerin, Dimethicone, Beta-Glucan or Salicornia Herbacea Extract. The purpose of both masks is different. Cica focuses on skin barrier while Water Sleeping Mask is all about hydration.
Laneige Lavender Water Sleeping Mask
Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trehalose, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone, Polyacrylic Acid, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propanediol, Dimethiconol, Tromethamine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearyl Behenate, Fragrance, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Disodium EDTA, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Potassium Alginate, Linalool, Magnesium Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide MEA, Beta-Glucan, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Manganese Sulfate, Limonene, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Root Extract, Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Zinc Sulfate, Potassium Sorbate, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Citric Acid, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Sodium Hyaluronate, Ascorbyl Glucoside
We've got here the same situation as with Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. Even between Original vs Lavender versions of cult sleeping mask the difference isn't significant.
Laneige Time Freeze Sleeping Mask
Water, Propanediol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Squalane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ceratonia Siliqua (Carob) Fruit Extract, Hibiscus Abelmoschus Seed Extract, Tillandsia Usneoides Extract, Adenosine, Hydrogenated Lecithin, C12-16 Alcohols, Glyceryl Caprylate, Dextrin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Butylene Glycol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Palmitic Acid, Polysorbate 20, PVP, PEG-240/HDI Copolymer Bis-Decyltetradeceth-20 Ether, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance
Laneige Time Freeze Sleeping Mask is my least favourite from Laneige collection. The problem was in the Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract. I get allergic reactions to oats in food, but three years ago, I was reacting to skincare ingredients a lot because my health was in poor condition. I bought this mask thanks to a friend. According to her, this mask is the best anti-ageing product available. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test it. Let's look a bit what's inside. Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract is an antioxidant good for skin problems like acne or eczema. Both, Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask and Laneige Time Freeze Sleeping Mask share one ingredient - Squalane. The mask has emollients and some moisturizers, but is there anything spectacular?
If I have to choose my favourite from all these four masks, then the decision is easy - Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask. Water Sleeping Mask used to be my favourite, but it just got dethroned. Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask might not be better than Hanyul Yuja Sleeping Mask, but it's a product which I'll recommend because the formula works! I believe in the power of Cica. I only hope now that Laneige will continue to make surprisingly good products.
