As you already know I adore Korean beauty industry but this industry also has its flaws - plastic surgeries are something common and they are normally accepted while having tattoos is consider as controversial. This time Rabble.pl asked me about self-acceptance and changing a natural appearance. I want to share my knowledge about not only the industry, medicine and natural ingredients with you, but I'll also show you my personal experience with self-acceptance and plastic surgeries.
Self-acceptance
I think that self-acceptance is an issue which you have to deal many times in your life - when your body starts to change, when you change your hair and something goes wrong, when you see first wrinkles, etc. It's a very hard topic because self-acceptance can be related to different issues - sometimes the lack of acceptance is related to your friends are relatives, for example, your mum or grandmother tells you to lose some weight because you won't find a husband or wife and you'll die alone with cats. Or maybe you start to question your look because of this one jealous of you girl or the one dude that wants to talk with you but he's an arrogant swine tells you that you look like a nun. When you are a teenager words hurt even more because you see all these models in magazine and you want to be like them. We are all attacked by the fit culture and Instagram trends - almost every girl under the age of 18 I know do the same makeup and wear the same clothes. I know that everyone wants to be ideal but you are perfect right now! There's no one that looks the same as you - even if you have a twin or doppelganger there are still some differences between you that make you unique.
Words can hurt
Words can hurt even more than anything else because we start to think about them all the time. If you are a very susceptible person then self-acceptance can take you ages. I can't say that I accept myself in 100% because I made some cosmetic changes in myself like I've changed my hair colour, I had and I still have some body mods. I even had a "surgery" because of the medical condition. But one day you'll meet a person who'll accept you the way you are. Or maybe you already met this person? That's how I built my self-acceptance - I've started to listening to all the compliments I've heard. I can't say that I feel like myself in makeup but I'm neither myself without it. I have days when I love my appearance and I have days when I hate my appearance and I blame hormones for that! What I want you to do is saying compliments to your friends and people around you because sometimes little jibes can be a reason of very serious issues such as eating disorder or other disorders related to the body.
Just as an anecdote I want to show you a video for the song Сиськи by Ленинград (Leningrad). Just to mention if you didn't catch it already Сиськи means boobs. Turn the subtitles on, the lyrics really fits our topic.

Body dysmorphic disorder
I feel like this topic is not really popular in media, we talk only about eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. All these illnesses are related to our mind and all these mental disorders might end up with a natural death or a suicide. BDD is an illness related to our body image, people who suffer BDD usually find different areas of their bodies as imperfect and it makes them backing out of social life. If you know someone who struggles with any of these disorders or if you struggles with them, please try to contact with a psychologist or psychiatrist. I'm not a specialist so I don't want to talk too much about this mental disorder but I want to encourage you to check BDD Foundation site where you can read more about this illness and get some help.
Plastic surgeries
In Korea plastic surgeries are something normal - no one hides the fact that they had a plastic surgery. Usually, people are changing their face shape to make the chin in a v-shape or they change the look of their eyelids. In Europe - breast surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery. For me, plastic surgeries are not necessary. We have to remember that you can get addicted to plastic surgeries and that plastic surgeries aren't always safety. We can't deny that plastic surgeries have good and bad sites. There are some conditions where plastic surgery can save your life - medical conditions such as for example - cancer. Mastectomy is a surgery which we barely talk about and many people call it a plastic surgery and I'm not 100% ok with that "category". It's a very humiliating surgery for every woman because as you can see in media breast is consider as an attractive part of the feminine body, this surgery takes away a part of your confidence. The most famous woman who has a mastectomy is Angelina Jolie, I think that her decision and how she openly talks about the surgery gives a lot of hope to another woman who struggles with the same issues.
The risk of surgeries
Every surgery takes a risk with it but plastic surgeries are even worse. I saw many documentaries which shows the differences between cheap plastic surgeries in countries like Thailand or Venezuela and expensive surgeries in luxury standards. The problem with cheap surgeries is that you never know if the doctor is really a doctor and if the used tools and implants are good for your health. There were a lot of stories of infections and how women and men nearly died due to complications after surgery. If you have other illnesses or you don't know about your health and the hospital forgot to check everything it might end up tragic for you as well. If you really want a plastic surgery then please don't choose the cheapest price or try natural and non-invasive ways to change your appearance.
My experience with plastic surgeries
I must admit I had a "plastic surgery" as my friends jokes, it was more like a short surgery for medical purposes than a plastic surgery but the fact that I've been walking with a bandage on my nose for two weeks made everyone thinking that I've done the surgery at the age of 18. I had something called fibroma on my nose and it's a tumour which is not really dangerous and you can live with it but I hated it so much. It took my whole confidence away. For me, it was a sign that I have to focus more on sun protection because I'm a very pale person and I've got a bigger risk of having a skin cancer than other people. As you can see some surgeries can take only couple minutes or seconds, they are quick and painless.
How to care for your skin & body in a natural way?
If you want to care about yourself more and make it easier to feel better? Then I hope that you'll try natural ways or beauty products which are safer for our skin and body than surgeries.
Acne - a very common problem not only for teenagers, but a good skin care can help you a lot, try products based on ingredients such as tea tree, green tea and Centella work amazing for acne. Wrinkles - a lot of people are scared of them but you can fake them a little bit with adenosine and face massage. Pigmentation - that's my biggest problem, what I'm doing is acid treatments (AHA/BHA), vitamin C and products based on liquorice, niacinamide and Centella. Rosacea - products based on soy, aloe and witch hazel. If you don't feel comfortable with your nose, chin, etc then makeup is a way in which you can hide or highlight the places you like or not. If you are not happy with your breast then breast/chest contouring is a thing but also activities can help (I mean exercises for this part of your body). Bottom - exercises. Hair - and now I'm talking about the hair we don't want like hair on our legs, bikini parts, etc. If you are tired of the traditional way then laser treatment might help you but you should also check the hormones. Body size and shape - if your weight is too little or too big then do a thyroid function test. Especially if you are on the diet and you can't lose weight or you can't "earn" the weight. The problem might be in the thyroid. If it's not the problem but you want to feel more sexy or cute then determining your body shape and wearing clothes which pay a compliment to your figure is a way to go. Remember - size doesn't matter, every woman can look great and no matter what size does she wear.
Less is more makeup
What's great in K-beauty is that products are less pigmented than our European and American ones. The beauty standards are different - they are more about complimenting natural features than putting kilogrammes of makeup.
Let's start with our face - the most important thing is to find your shade of foundation - I'm a very pale person with neutral undertones (the whole instruction on finding your undertone is here). We all make mistakes and it'll take ages to find the ideal shade so don't worry. The most natural makeup product I found was facetone skin tint from tonymoly - the coverage was mild, the colour was great and it looked very natural on my skin. I like when my face is not too dry but also not too oily.
Eyes and eyebrows - know that large and black eyebrows are so popular right now but believe me it doesn't always look good. I personally like Benefit Gimme Brow - it gives a shape and a colour but still it looks very natural. For eyes - choose neutral colours, my favourite neutral eyeshadow is Maybelline Color Tattoo in a shade Creme de Rose. Mascara is my "must have" but remember not to put 10 layers of mascara onto your lashes. We don't want to look like a drag queen - even if their makeup is a piece of art, for everyday makeup it's not the best choice.
Cheekbones - it's your choice in which colour do you feel better, I'm always trying to find a very delicate peachy shade or something similar to taupe shade because I feel better in shades like that. Add some blush to make it look natural. Cream blushes or tints are giving a very delicate effect of a blush, my choice this time was Benefit Benetint which is not what I'm usually wearing. You can use it for your lips too.
Lips - I like to leave my lips bare or smudge the lipstick all over my lips. The most affordable ones are Tonymoly petite bunny series - you can already guess why I love them so much - the packaging is amazing! And that's our "natural" makeup, it will take you less than 15 minutes to do very minimalistic makeup.
Documentaries and videos worth to check
If you would like to know more about topics I've mentioned in this post, I've got couple recommendations of documentaries and videos which might be interesting for you.
I really like the i-D's series Beyond Beauty with Grace Neutral - Grace focused on topics related to the beauty industry and tattoo art in Korea. I didn't focus this topic in this post but in Korea, plastic surgeries are more acceptable while having tattoos it's nothing good due to the controversial history of tattoo art. If you know the polish language then I encourage you to watch couple episodes of a program called "Kobieta na krańcu świata" - especially the episodes from Thailand or Venezuela.
There's a video on youtube called "The World's Strangest Plastic Surgery and Me" - it shows the extremal cases of plastic surgeries.
One of the thing that every woman should read is an article/diary written by Angelina Jolie - the famous actress who had a breast surgery which has saved her life.
