Acne can take ages to cure and you're still not guaranteed that your skin will stay flawless forever - it can attack you again with a bigger force. Still, the worst case scenario is a pimple before an important event like a party, wedding or a date. Hopefully, the rise of pimple patches saved my skin so many times but what if we mix pimple patches, one of the coolest skincare ingredient - Madecassoside - and skincare trend technology - microneedles - together? One of the most powerful healing inventions or... the worst thing ever for your skin? Korean brand called A'Pieu decided to risk and release Madecassoside Needle Spot Patch, obviously, I couldn't say no to myself since if the technology and skincare are involved then I can't say no!
Pimple patches - are they really needed and how they should be used?
Some people say they are useless and for others living without acne, patches would be the biggest horror. I keep forgetting about using patches because my pimples aren't as bad as they used to be (I guess after I publish this post my skin will get more breakouts than usually). It's kinda funny how I keep telling everyone "don't pop your pimples" but when I'm alone I totally forgot about it. Pimple patches can be useful if you keep popping your acne - you put a patch on and you can't really do a lot. But they are also good with removing the pimple, I always try to pop them with a needle first but please don't do it at home - I believe that you can always find people who won't keep their safety first that's why I won't tell you how to do it. Someone would say, microneedles or needle, what's the difference? Believe me, there's a huge difference!
Are needle patches different from standard patches?
Yes, Pimple patches are hydrocolloid patches that protect your skin from all the dangerous stuff your inflamed skin can meet outside. Microneedle matches from A'pieu are made the same with small detail - microneedles. Even if both types of patches have some ingredients that work on your pimples microneedles are more effective since the substance is not put on the surface of the skin and you have to remember that skin doesn't absorb products in 100% because molecules of the products sometimes are too big to penetrate through skin layers (that's why fermentation is so popular - it makes molecules smaller and easier to get through the layers), needles make the way from surface to deeper layers of the skin shorter. But it's also not that easy as it looks like but I'll mention that later.
A'Pieu - let's talk a bit about a brand and Madecassoside series
A'Pieu is a South Korean brand which we can literally say - it's a sister brand of Missha. The products are affordable so it's not a surprise that this brand is mostly used by young girls, women and students. Cheap prices don't mean that the products from A'Pieu aren't worth a try. This brand got me with amazing collabs like Marymond and Dailylike but it also has series which are worth a look like Madecassoside. Need a cream, sunscreen or maybe a sleeping mask? The Madecassoside line has many interesting options, personally, my favourite is Madecassoside Fluid which I guess I'll have to introduce you to it before autumn because this product is a lifesaver.
What's inside A'Pieu Madecassoside Needle Spot Patch?
You will be surprised because Needle Spot Patches aren't made only by 3 components - Colloid patch, needles and Madecassoside, the key to this formula is more like programming code.
Madecassoside (5%), Sodium Hyaluronate (92%), Salicylic Acid, Gaultheria Procumbens Leaf Extract
I took this information from the packaging, so where are the needles? Needles are actually made out of the ingredients you see above! And even better - they dissolve in the skin so after 8-12 hours when you take it off, you probably won't see any needles left on the patch. I'm sure you know the main star aka Madecassoside, it's a substance which you can find in Centella Asiatica, it's used in many products including cosmeceuticals/dermocosmetics. The popularity of this ingredient isn't an accident, it's a soothing ingredient that can speed up the healing process. A'Pieu had a great idea to mix microneedles with Madecassoside because it can help with inflammation made by acne. Sodium Hyaluronate is probably well known to you - one of the most effective humectants. Salicylic Acid is known as BHA, it's an acid that helps with blackheads and acne, some people are allergic to it. Last but not least Gaultheria Procumbens (Wintergreen) Leaf Extract is also told to be helpful with inflammation.
So much packaging
The patches are packed so well - plastic bag in which you can find a plastic box and moisture absorber. Who needs a moisture absorber? The patches need it! A tiny bit of dampness can dissolve needles and A'Pieu didn't want to make it happened. Once you get to a patch you'll see how delicate the needles are - even when applied you won't feel them. Obviously, patches have separate stickers too, they are well made but please remember not to touch the needles since you don't want to transfer bacteria from your fingers to the needles. The application process might seem to be easy but personally, I believe it's kinda complicated - you have to clean your skin and make sure your skin is free from bacteria. What I would do is to use an antiseptic product or disinfectant (go for the ones used for hands) and clean the spot where you want to apply the patch so you can be sure that nothing bad goes under the surface of the skin. The patch can be on your skin up to 12 hours and personally, I feel like it works better when I have it on my skin for 4 hours only. I had a small issue with these patches but patches weren't the only problem -my skin started to freak out and my lipid barrier got worse, even when I gave up the patches I had this issue which turned to be a more complex problem - I forgot about using antiseptic substance on the spot, I worked in an environment where every day I had to deal with over 100 people and different skin diseases, I used Vitamin C + Niacinamide formula which I shouldn't use on my face because sensitive skin doesn't like this mix and I was tired and I even ended up with the flu due to my bad condition - not to mention weather which was surprisingly low for the month of May. If you apply the patch well and remember about being careful the patches can be better than you think - because they speed up the healing process, they can be helpful with acne and inflammation.
