My Journey With Aklief Treatment - My Skincare Routine

Galderma Aklief treatment routine

Maskne is one of the most common skin problems lately, even if I'm a certified esthetician, and I'm used to working with a mask on my face, my skin didn't go through mask season well. Thanks to Bioderma's campaign I found a dermatologist who recommended me to try Aklief - a new generation of retinoid, and since it's a new treatment, I want to share with you few tips which I wish I knew when I started to use Aklief.

THIS POST IS NOT AN AD! I'VE MADE IT TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE WITH OTHER AKLIEF USERS. REMEMBER TO VISIT DERMATOLOGIST BEFORE GETTING AKLIEF - DO NOT BUY ACNE TREATMENTS FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES - ESPECIALLY PRESCRIPTION ONES!!!

What's Aklief?

Aklief is a patented name for Trifarotene Cream - a topical 4th generation retinoid. In Europe Aklief is sold by Galderma - the same company owns Epiduo & Differin, Cetaphil, Benzac, Proactive, Restylane and more. You probably know Cetaphil, and if you have acne history just like I did you know Epiduo and Differin. I had enough luck to try both before, and Differin worked well for me, with Epiduo I had a worse experience, but I don't blame the product, but my dermatologist. But back to Trifarotene - it's a fourth-generation retinoid which you can only get with a prescription. Trifarotene is supposed to be more effective with fewer side effects.

Why did my dermatologist decide to try Aklief on my skin?

The last time I visited dermatologist was about seven years ago, since as you might know the last time I went to a dermatologist I had skin tumour diagnosed as a blackhead. I went to the aesthetic clinic to check my skin and do the procedure. I'm very pale, and when I was a teenager none of the dermatologists I met recommended me to use sunscreen - back then it was a common practice in post-soviet & post-communistic countries to ask people to spend summer with low UV protection or skip UV protection. Retinoids and lack of sun protection is the worst thing you can serve your skin as a teenager. In June 2020, I started to have issues with my hands due to poor quality hand sanitisers - I'm still fighting with my problems. Bioderma had an offer where you were able to contact a specialist thought video call since dermatologists are not cheap, and I had a bad experience before I've decided to try this option. I had to send photos of my skin, and that's why we've decided to go for Aklief. My skin was full of acne and small bumps under my skin. I was happy that for the first time someone told me how I'm supposed to use the treatment, what I should do, and what I should avoid. I'm currently waiting for 2nd visit, and even if my skin got worse in January thanks to poor diet (the magic of Christmas with your family and working from home), but still my skin looks better than in October - you can see on your own.

How my skin reacted to Aklief?

First two weeks in November I was trying to use it every two or three days, then I tried to use it every day. I use Aklief only during the night routine 15-30 minutes after cleansing. At first, my skin got dry, and I had huge problems finding products that work well with my overly sensitive skin. I have to avoid essential oils, alcohol and citric acid. I have to avoid acids (although my dermatologist told me that if my skin is fine, then I might continue using 3% PHA in the morning routine) and be careful with vitamin C. You will probably see some essential oils in my skincare. For example, Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Gel was a horrible experience for me when I tried it use it with Aklief.

Cleansing: Nivea Naturally Good Micellar Water

My morning routine

Cleansing: Nivea Naturally Good Micellar Water

Aqua, Alcohol Denat., Pentylene Glycol, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Sorbitol, Decyl Glucoside, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Sodium Chloride

I usually start with cleanser - I use micellar water and pure water. There are two techniques of using micellar water - some people are just leaving it, and others remove it with water. Which one is better? Personally, I prefer to remove micellar water with pure water, because some micellar waters are leaving an oily residue on your skin.

I'm a huge fan of AHC Eye Creams, but Time Rewind Real Eye Cream For Face is a masterpiece. The ingredient list is super long, but the amount of love AHC put in their product is impossible, and actually, this eye cream is one of the most sold eye creams in South Korea. Let me tell you straight, I sleep less than I should, and I swear this eye cream saves me from wrinkles and dark circles.

Cream: Go-To Very Useful Face Cream

Cream: Go-To Very Useful Face Cream

Water, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Glyceryl Oleate Citrate, Amla Berry Extract, Arachidyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Avocado Oil, Sunflower Oil, Mango Butter, Milk Thistle Ethyl Ester, Benzyl Alcohol, Coenzyme Q10, Arachidyl Glucoside, Vitamin E, Sodium Citrate, Lysolecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Xanthan Gum, Pullulan, Dehydroacetic Acid, Natural Fragrance (Fig And Oriental Rose)

I have to admit that Go-To Very Useful Face Cream was a bit scary to use, why? Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Arachidyl Glucoside, and Vitamin E. Plus Benzyl Alcohol, how does my skin react to that? Somehow, the texture turned out to be lighter than I thought, and yes this cream is very useful. It leaves a delicate film on your skin, but it helped me a lot with dry skin, and it didn't sensitize my skin - which I thought might happen since it contains natural fragrance. It might look heavy and like a total mistake for oily skin, but go-to surprised me with how creamy (and dreamy) the texture is. The size is ideal if you have to travel with your cream just like I do (even during lockdown I have labs which I can't avoid).

Sesderma Repaskin Fluido Invisible SPF 50+

Sunscreen: Sesderma Repaskin Fluido Invisible SPF 50+

Aqua, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Titanium Dioxide (Nano), * Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Alcohol, Arabidopsis Thaliana Extract, Ascorbyl Palmitate, BHT, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Citric Acid, Decyl Glucoside, Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Ergothioneine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glycerin, Glyceryl Oleate, Glyceryl Stearate, Hexylene Glycol, Hydrochloric Acid, Lecithin, Micrococcus Lysate, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, Plankton Extract, Polysilicone-11, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Sorbate, Resveratrol Dimethyl Ether, Silica, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Cholate, Sodium Hydroxide, Thermus Thermophillus Ferment, Tocopherol

I already posted a review of this sunscreen in 2020, it's not a perfect sunscreen since at first, it didn't work with my skin after Aklief, it was a bit painful when I used it, but now it's fine. Just have it in mind that sometimes you'll have problems with makeup since the first stage of using retinoids is nothing else than heavy exfoliation of the skin in areas where your skin is thinner. Still, sun protection is important - even during winter, and with retinoids, it's a must!

Tonymoly Vital Vita 12 Jelly Cleanser

My evening routine

1st cleanser: Tonymoly Vital Vita 12 Jelly Cleanser

Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Panthenol, Trehalose, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Allantoin, Betaine, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Oil, Disodium EDTA, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Octyldodecanol, Niacinamide, PEG-35 Castor Oil, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Calcium Pantothenate, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Maltodextrin, Copaifera Officinalis (Balsam Copaiba) Resin, Cymbopogon Martini Oil, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Lecithin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Oil, Pyridoxine Hcl, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Polysorbate 20, Tocopherol, Squalane, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Silica, Retinyl Palmitate, Inositol, Linoleic Acid, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Cananga Odorata Flower Extract, Biotin, Glyceryl Arachidonate, Glyceryl Linolenate, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine, Thiamine Hcl, Cyanocobalamin

Tonymoly Vital Vita 12 Jelly Cleanser is a surprise because it smells nice, it removes my makeup better than my favourite Nivea Cleansing Oil, and even if it's full of natural extracts and oils - it doesn't sensitize me. It doesn't leave the fog in my eyes or give me red-eye. If I have to admit - I wish I bought more than one jar since I got it on sale and honestly, it's probably the best Tonymoly product I've ever tried.

2nd Cleanser: Good Molecules Rosewater Daily Cleansing Gel

Water - (80.0%), Propanediol - (5.7%), Glycerin - (5.0%), Sodium Cocoamphoacetate - (2.3%), Coco-Betaine - (2.2%), Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate - (1.4%), Dehydroxanthan Gum - (1.1%), Rosa Damascena Flower Water - (1.0%), Citric Acid- (0.6%), Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate - (0.4%), Caprylyl Glyceryl Ether - (0.3%), Caprylhydroxamic Acid - (0.1%), Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract - (0.1%)

Good Molecules is a brand that gives me mixed feelings, I can't fully agree with their policy, but Rosewater Daily Cleansing Gel is a delicate cleanser with gel texture and right pH - and in my case pH is crucial since my skin reacts to the wrong pH like crazy. pH around 5,5 is the best for your skin if you have acne - change your cleanser to one with pH around 5,5 (your skin doesn't have neutral pH, but a bit acidic pH, so pH around 4,8-5,6/5,7 is right).

One again - I use AHC eye cream, probably the best eye cream I've ever tried.

Bioderma Cicabio Creme Texture

Cream: Bioderma Cicabio Creme

Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Fructooligosaccharides, Zinc Oxide, Octyldodecanol, Butylene Glycol, Polyacrylamide, Mannitol, Xylitol, Rhamnose, Laminaria Ochroleuca Extract, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Vine Extract, Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassic Acid, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Octyldodecyl Xyloside, Peg-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Laureth-7, Laureth-3, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Acetyl Dipeptide-1 Cetyl Ester, Potassium Sorbate

When I started to use Aklief, it was the only product I was able to use. It's not a light formula, and for acne-prone skin using it every single day can be problematic. What I can recommend to you is using it every few days instead - only when your skin feels super irritated.

Dr Jart+ Cicapair Cream

Cream: Dr Jart+ Cicapair Cream

Water, Propanediol, Centella Asiatica Leaf Water, Butylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Panthenol, Diisostearyl Malate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate, Niacinamide, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, 1,2-Hexanediol, PEG-8, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyacrylate-13, Palmitic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Beeswax (Cera Alba), Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Polyisobutene, Asiaticoside, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, Spirulina Platensis Powder, Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Sorbitan Isostearate, Adenosine, Ceramide, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Disodium EDTA, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Dextrin, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Oil, Centella Asiatica Meristem Cell Culture, Madecassoside, Citric Acid, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Artemisia Absinthium Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Gentiana Lutea Root Extract, Sucrose Laurate, Sodium Glycerophosphate, Selaginella Lepidophylla Extract, Potassium Magnesium Aspartate, Lysolecithin, Magnesium Gluconate, Calcium Gluconate, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthan Gum

I posted a full review on Dr Jart+ Cicapair Cream, I tried Gel version as well, and Cream won my heart! Even if it has essential oils in the formula, it didn't irritate my skin. It soothes the irritation, but the formula is too heavy to use it under makeup that's why I use it only during the evening routine. I like to switch it with Bioderma Cicabio from time to time.

Additional products

Toner: Aromatica Lively Superbarrier Hyaluronic Acid Toner

Aqua, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caprylyl Glycol, Illicium Verum Fruit Extract, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Panthenol, Propanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, Pentylene Glycol, Madecassoside, Tamarindus Indica Seed Polysaccharide, Ceramide NP, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Inulin, Cellulose, Glucose, Fructose

When my skin feels dehydrated, then toners are the most useful products I use. Aromatica Lively Superbarrier Hyaluronic Acid Toner has a thick formula, very similar to the cult Klairs Unscented Supple Preparation Toner. It has no scent and it contains Hyaluronic Acid and Madecassoside which is a win-win situation.

Belif The True Tincture Essence Chamomile

Essence: Belif The True Tincture Essence Chamomile

Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (86%), 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Beta-Glucan, Panthenol, Glycereth-26, Centella Asiatica Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract*, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract*, Nepeta Cataria Extract*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Leaf Extract*, Baptisia Tinctoria Root Extract*, Stellaria Media (Chickweed) Extract*, Saccharomyces/Imperata Cylindrica Root Ferment Extract, Saccharomyces/Viscum Album (Mistletoe) Ferment Extract, Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract, Alcohol, Water, Glucosyl Hesperidin, Polydatin, Niacinamide, Trisodium EDTA, PEG-8, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Alanyl Glutamine, PEG-150, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ethylhexylglycerin, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Fragrance+, Citral, Citronellol, Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool

Belif The True Tincture Essence Chamomile has one of the most amazing packagings I've ever seen. It's not a super hydrating essence, but the herbal scent and the pharmacy-like/old bottle from pharmacy design got me. Usually, people don't even know this series exists! And that's interesting because the majority of people I know tried Aqua Bomb Cream which I'm not a fan of. I believe True Tincture series is way better.

Korres Greek Yoghurt Comforting Probiotic Serum

Serum: Korres Greek Yoghurt Comforting Probiotic Serum

Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Propanediol, Algin, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Ascorbic Acid, Bisabolol, Caprylyl Glycol, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Disodium Phosphate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Lactic Acid, Lactobacillus, Lactobacillus/Arundinaria Gigantea Ferment Filtrate, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Maltodextrin, Maris Aqua/Sea Water/Eau De Mer, Menthyl Lactate, Phenethyl Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Polymnia Sonchifolia Root Juice, Potassium Phosphate, Pullulan, Saccharide Isomerate, Salvia Hispanica Seed Oil, Serine, Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Tocopherol, Trehalose, Urea, Yogurt, Yogurt Powder, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum/Fragrance

I need to publish a full review of Korres, since this Yoghurt series is interesting, but somehow neither moisturizer nor serum won my heart. I still have a mask to try, but after serum and moisturizer, I'm not fully interested. What's my problem with Korres Greek Yoghurt Comforting Probiotic Serum? Even if it's a probiotic series, the amount of alcohol is a no-no for me, I can use it every few days because it makes my skin dry and irritated, but I have to appreciate the formula.

Mask: Bielenda Professional Antioxidant Algae Face Mask with Matcha

Glucose, Algin, Calcium Sulfate, Hydrate, Silica, Sodium Polyacrylate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder, Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Trehalose, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Avena Sativa Kernel Flour, Parfum, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene

Bielenda Professional is a Polish brand which I used at med school, and many estheticians work on this brand. It's an affordable brand, but they have some products that can surprise you like this Antioxidant Algae Face Mask with Matcha. First of all, it's a Matcha mask! Second, the texture is amazing. Algae masks can make lots of mess at home - remember that you should be careful with them, you don't want to block your sink, you should take the entire mask off and throw it into the trash, same with the rest of the formula - it's better to put it in the trash than try to wash it away in the sink. Bielenda's product smells good, and even if the matcha mask is recommended for mature skin, it can be soothing.

And that's how my routine works. Are you on Aklief? How was your journey with this retinoid?

WHERE YOU CAN FIND ME?
