About Pyunkang Yul
The first time I've heard about Pyunkang Yul was while I was watching Joan Day's vlogs. Pyunkang Yul is a part of the Pyunkang Oriental Medicine Clinic. From what I found, this clinic's speciality is atopic skin diseases. It's a cruelty-free brand with products based on hanbang - traditional Korean medicine, something I love as a person. All the products created by Pyunkang Yul have ingredients ideal for sensitive skin. You won't find too many ingredients in these products, because simple solutions are sometimes the best.
What's Hanbang?
Before we start we need to understand what Hanbang stands for. Hanbang is a term for Traditional Korean Medicine. You can be a bit shocked since some ingredients used in Traditional Korean Medicine are similar to Traditional Chinese Medicine but that shouldn't surprise you since there are some herbs which you can find all around the world used to cure the illness. But Hanbang is not only about skincare but health in general. It's about using natural ingredients to help your body. Nowadays if it comes to Hanbang skincare it's usually about mixing tradition with technologies but still, it's all about antioxidants and the power of natural ingredients. Lots of luxurious brands are based on traditional herbal medicine. You have to believe that traditional medicine has a strong meaning in the culture - just look at universities in Korea, you can find lots of programs related to traditional medicine.
Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack - Packaging
The packaging is a regular sheet mask packaging - you would never guess how the mask looks like if you saw the packaging first. Sadly, I wasn't able to take photos of the mask itself, but I swear, you would be surprised. The aesthetic of Acne line fits the main Pyunkang Yul line - it has white and light blue shades which makes me think about this line as a line for sensitive skin.
Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack - Scent & Texture
The dressing mask from Pyunkang Yul has no scent - or at least I didn't feel any specific scent. The mask is made out of 4 big rectangular pieces soaked in essence. It's probably a cellulose mask. This solution is ideal to cover T and U zone.
Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack - Ingredients
Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Forsythia Suspensa Fruit Extract, Cryptomeria Japonica Leaf Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Leaf Extract, PEG-60, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Pentylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA
Water is an ingredient that you can find in almost every product. Its purpose in products is easy - it's a solvent.
Butylene Glycol is a moisturizer and solvent, but it's also alcohol. You see, not every alcohol in skincare is terrible. Some of them have positive effects on your skin - just like Butylene Glycol, which is a popular substance even in eco/green cosmetic products.
Glycerin is one of the most popular humectants in skincare. There's a large number of myths around glycerin like it can clog your skin. It doesn't clog your pores, but too much glycerin can make a sticky layer on the epidermis and even make your skin dryer than before due to TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss). Still, it's an ingredient that we want to see in formulas.
The next ingredient should be well known to you since Sodium Chloride is nothing else than... salt!. Sodium Chloride is a thickener
Sodium Hyaluronate is a salt form of a popular Natural Moisturizing Factor - Hyaluronic Acid.
Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract is an anti-inflammatory relative of Salicylic Acid aka BHA. It's an astringent recommended for acne-prone skin White willow is a source of salicin, catechins and tannins.
Forsythia Suspensa Fruit Extract or weeping forsythia is a plant that came from Asia. It's one of the herbs from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Forsythia Suspensa Fruit Extract is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.
This time we have to talk about Cryptomeria Japonica Leaf Extract
and Nelumbo Nucifera Leaf Extract together. Since sometimes the ingredients we see in products can make something bigger together, this duo has anti-inflammatory properties and they are key to success for acne-prone skin.
PEG-60 is a solvent.
Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a castor oil but in a wax form. It's an emollient.
Pentylene Glycol is a humectant with antimicrobial properties.
It feels like 1,2-Hexanediol is everywhere, and it's not a surprise. Even if it's a solvent, it's also a moisturizer.
Caprylyl Glycol is a moisturizer and an oily emollient. It leaves a delicate, protective film on your skin. But that's not all, Caprylyl Glycol is useful when you want to keep your product free from unfriendly stuff like microbes.
Ethylhexylglycerin is a preservative.
Disodium EDTA is a synthetic stabilizer and preservative. It helps with the viscosity of the product.
Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack - How does it work?
First of all, Pyunkang Yul made a clever move since it's probably the only brand that made mask pack like this - normally, mask pack is a trend which lately I don't see often, but about 3 or 4 years ago, it was as common as a 7-skin trend. The packaging contains four pieces of mask soaked in essence. For my skin, three pieces are enough since my face is very tiny. Right now, I'm still on Aklief (4th gen retinoid) treatment, so my skin is very sensitive. Pyunkang Yul mastered sensitive skincare that's why I used this mask without worrying about any burns or bad reactions - still, I recommend you to do a test before you use this mask on your skin. Even if I'm on a retinoid, I need some additional acne skincare from time to time. Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack is refreshing and soothing, it worked with my sensitive skin and that's why I appreciate it. It's a treatment ideal for home office - while sheet masks are usually too big for me, the mask pack fits well (even if sometimes it has issues with sticking to my face fully). If you have teenage kids, siblings or you're a teenager then I would strongly recommend this product since it has mild ingredients. It's based on two natural extract -Cryptomeria Japonica Leaf Extract
and Nelumbo Nucifera Leaf Extract. The product has anti-inflammatory properties, and it's better to calm your acne-prone skin than work with actives.
Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack - Where to get it?
I was able to test this mask thanks to Palace Beauty Galleria - a beauty store with Korean and Japanese products located in LA. PS. Palace Beauty Galleria has an online website where you can find Pyunkang Yul ACNE Dressing Mask Pack for $4.00.
Overall, Pyunkang Yul is a huge surprise for me since ACNE line seems to work better on my skin than regular skin. This line can be a good intro to K-beauty for teenagers, but adults should enjoy it as well.
