Are you a team foundation or team cushion? I love the idea of cushions, but finding a cushion or foundation that fits my skin tone is tricky. I tried Clio Kill Cover Cushion, before and my first attempt wasn't the best. After my all-time favourite cushion from Pony Effects failed, I've decided to give Clio the 2nd try. Is Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New 1.5 Fair going to be my new favourite cushion?
Types of Cushions
There are different types of cushions that you can find but I guess the easiest way to band all the cushions is by their purpose - makeup cushions and sun cushions. Makeup cushions are easy to determine while sun cushions are new in Europe - it's cushions filled with sunscreen. It makes sunscreen reapplication easier and it's very portable. Makeup cushions can be banded in different groups - microfoam cushions and pumping cushions. Microfoam cushion has a foam filled with the formula inside while pumping cushion is a cushion where the formula is hidden under a plastic or metal disc with small holes - Skin79, VDL and Estee Lauder had cushions like that, but I don't know if they still release this type of products. There are also foundations in cream that look like the cushion but I'm not going to focus on them since usually, we use them not as a foundation but as camouflage.
What does the cushion look like?
The cushion has one or two parts - a cushion case and refill or a case with the built-in refill. Each case usually has a built-in mirror. The refill contains filling - (usually) a microfoam filled with formula in a plastic case and air puff on the upper lid of this plastic case.
Refills & air-puffs
When you buy a cushion there are two things to remember about - refills and air puffs. Refills are the containers with (usually) a microfoam and formula. They usually have air puffs together with a refill but not every cushion has this option. Refills are cheaper than cushions and usually, it's better to go for the refill option. Normally, each refill contains air puff but you can buy puffs separately - I recommended that if you're a makeup artist or you're allergic. Makeup artists can use this type of puff on their fingers when they put makeup on the client or model to not mess up the makeup while putting makeup on eyelids or lips. There are also refill sets with liquid formula - Klairs based its cushion on this type of refill.
Choice of shades
The most complicated topic ever. Asian cushions have usually a very limited number of shades - 2 or 3 shades, sometimes there's one universal colour, and some brands make 5 or even more shades. I'll focus on that while showing you some cushions I've tried before. Clio did a great job since Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New is available in 7 colours: 1.5 Fair, 2 Lingerie, 2.5 Ivory, 3 Linen, 3.5 Vanila, 4 Ginger and 5 Sand.

Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New 1.5 Fair - Packaging
Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New 1.5 Fair comes in a box with refill - I was pretty sure I bought cushion alone, not cushion + refill. I don't even know how to describe the packaging - it's a black cushion with a blue tint. Inside you can see an applicator and mirror, once you open the applicator "shelf" you can get to the microfoam full of foundation.
Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New 1.5 Fair - Texture & Scent
I'm surprised by how thick this formula is. It's a lightweight cushion with very good coverage. The scent is delicate, floral and creamy.

Water hides in cosmetic products under names such as Aqua or Eau. It's a solvent, but it's not your regular drinking water. Water in skin care needs to fit some standards. It should be clean and free from minerals, microorganisms or other substances. Usually, water makes up the majority of the content of the product. Cyclopentasiloxane is a dry emollient and volatile silicone. It has a bad reputation since people nowadays are scared of silicones. Don't be scared, Cyclopentasiloxane doesn't leave a heavy film on the skin since volatile silicones are evaporating after touching your skin. They help with the application process of the product. If you want your skin or hair to have a silky feeling - go for this one. It's a lightweight substance that won't cause you acne. Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891) is a mineral (or physical) sunscreen agent. It protects your skin from UVB and UVA II radiation and might cover some lower waves in the UVA I spectrum. It has a typical white colour visible on the skin, unless it's a nano version then this white tint might not be visible at all. This ingredient has a second task - it works as a pigment. Titanium Dioxide works perfectly for skin that needs visible protection like skin with melasma, nice that white pigment works as a barrier or protective film on the skin. It has one additional task, it makes products stay fresh a bit longer. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate or Octinoxate is a non-stable UVB sunscreen agent. Butylene Glycol is a common ingredient in products. It's not only a solvent. We use butylene glycol because it helps with the penetration of active ingredients, protects products from drying and moisturizes skin and hair. This ingredient can prevent hair loss and make your hair stronger. Ethylhexyl Salicylate or Octisalate is a sun-protecting agent. It's a chemical sunscreen that protects the skin from UVB radiation (280-320nm), but it has its peak at 306nm which makes it a weak sunscreen.
Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone is an emulsifier that usually comes along with mineral sunscreen agents like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Cetyl Ethylhexanoate is an emollient that leaves a velvet layer on the surface of the skin. It appears in cleansing products, and it makes brushing and detangling your hair easier. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 - a vitamin soluble in water. It helps with problems like wrinkles, acne, skin texture, and enlarged pores and promotes collagen synthesis. Niacinamide makes the skin barrier stronger. It might be handy in cellulite treatments. Do you want to fight pigmentation or uneven skin? Try to mix niacinamide with Kojic Acid, Arbutin, Vitamin C, Tranexamic Acid or Retinol. Polymethylsilsesquioxane is a silicone that protects your skin from dehydration by creating a film on the skin's surface. Silicones have a positive meaning to your skin - they make products easier to spread, make the formula more elegant and even protect skin and hair. 1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic solvent and preservative - it protects products from microorganisms by boosting other preservatives. At the same time, it can moisturize the skin, and it has no unpleasant effects on your epidermis. Silica is a mineral-natural ingredient. It's popular in makeup and skincare. It can absorb sebum or thicken the texture. Mica (Ci 77019) is a mineral, and it works as a pigment. It reflects light. There's a controversy around this ingredient - mining this ingredient isn't always going along with proper work conditions.
Methyl Trimethicone is a volatile silicone, a type of silicone that evaporates right after product application. It works as a solvent in the products. Betula Platyphylla Japonica (Birch Sap) Juice is a sap from Asian white birch. It's a moisturizing juice rich in vitamins and amino acids. PEG-10 Dimethicone is silicone, it's primarily used in skincare as an emulsifier but it can have some mild moisturizing properties. Many people are scared of silicones even if silicones used in skin care have to fit restrictive norms. Silicones have a positive meaning to your skin - they make products easier to spread, make the formula more elegant and even protect skin and hair. Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer is a film-former with anticaking properties which makes it ideal for makeup. It makes your skin look soft and helps your makeup last a bit longer. Isododecane is a light emollient, mostly used in hair products. Magnesium Sulfate or Epsom Salt is an ingredient with a history. The name Epsom Salt comes from the city of Epsom in England, but you can call it bath salt as well. It works as a stabilizer. Stearic Acid is a fatty acid that works as an emollient and emulsifier. Triethoxycaprylylsilane helps to spread pigment evenly. Aluminum Oxide or Alumina absorbs sebum and prevents your makeup from caking. It's also a thickener.
Aluminum Hydroxide is an emollient, but it can be used as a colourant or... a tiny help for your sunscreen. Aluminum Hydroxide is a coating for Titanium Dioxide. Have you ever seen a thickener made out of hectorite - a white clay? Meet Disteardimonium Hectorite - it works as a stabilizer, gives your skin a sheer look, and in sunscreen formulas, it makes your UV protection even better. Dimethicone is silicone and polymer. Adenosine naturally occurs in the skin. One of the adenosine's roles in our bodies is being a neurotransmitter. In skin care, we use adenosine for its anti-wrinkle properties. Adenosine is an anti-inflammatory ingredient. It can boost collagen production. At the same time, it speeds up the healing process. Adenosine can have positive effects on reducing redness. In hair care, adenosine can help with hair loss. Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate or EDDS neutralizes ions in the formula to make your product fresh for a bit longer. Tocopherol is an antioxidant known as Vitamin E. It's an oil-soluble vitamin that fights free radicals and makes UVB protection and natural lipid barrier stronger. It's good to mix it with vitamin C for better effects. Oily skin might react with pore-clogging to vitamin E. It is not true that vitamin E works as a preservative or helps with scars.
Acrylates/Stearyl Acrylate/Dimethicone Methacrylate Copolymer is a silicone that leaves a delicate film on the skin. It helps spread makeup evenly.
Boron Nitride absorbs sebum, that's why it's so popular in makeup products. It disperses the light and thickens the formula. Boron Nitride adds a satin finish to the makeup product, and in lip products, it helps spread the product. Succinic Acid has anti-inflammatory properties. Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer is a thickener. Glyceryl Caprylate is a natural oily emollient and emulsifier. It creates a delicate film on the surface of the skin. It has some antimicrobial properties. Fragrance (Parfum) is a scent composition. It can cause allergic reactions. Limonene is a scent ingredient, and it makes the product smell like lemon or orange. Limonene can enhance the penetration of other substances, but at the same time, it can irritate the skin. Linalool gives a floral scent to products. It can irritate the skin. Butylphenyl Methylpropional or Lilial is a floral scent ingredient. Since 2022, this ingredient is banned in the EU. It's a strong allergen. Yellow Iron Oxide (Ci 77492) is a yellow pigment. Red Iron Oxide (Ci 77491) is a red or even brownish-red pigment with UV protection properties. Black Iron Oxide (Ci 77499) is a black pigment.
How does Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New 1.5 Fair work?
I said that before, reviewing cushions is the worst since every skin acts differently. My skin type is a combination, but I'm more on the oily side. Clio promoted Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New as "thinner and finer than ever", the brand also claims that this cushion can stay up to 54 hours. I don't know who needs a cushion that stays on the skin for 54 hours, but if you do then this review might be interesting to you. Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New is also touch-proof and has velvet finishing. It has a brightening and anti-wrinkle effect, and SPF 50+ PA+++ protection.
Clio in Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New decided to add new shades. Shade 1.5 Fair is the one that I've decided to go for, it's the same as shade #13 in regular cushions. 2 Lingerie, 2.5 Ivory and 3 Linen are equivalent to shade #21. Shade 3.5 Vanila is the same as #22 and shade 4 Ginger is the same as shade #23. 5 Sand is something like shades #23 and #24. So the choice seems to be huge, but there are going to be people not happy with this choice. Remember, Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New was created for Korean/Asian customers, that's why this shade range is quite limited in comparison to US makeup brands.
I can already spoil you with this review - I love this cushion! It might not stay on my skin for 54 hours but half of the day, but my skin lately got a bit dehydrated and none of the cushions or foundations wants to work with it. Still, on a good day, this cushion lasts way longer. I love shade 1.5 Fair, it's a cold shade with a pink undertone and sometimes when I use very intensive blush it doesn't look like the best choice, but I like how shade 1.5 fits my skin better than many other products.
As you can see on the photo above, Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New can even work on blush and wax eyebrow pencil. You can see that the shade 1.5 Fair isn't the ideal match, but it isn't bad!
Clio Kill Cover Founwear Cushion All New has no problem if it comes to application - a small amount can help you cover the entire face, and you don't need to spend hours to work this cushion on the skin. It hides all the imperfections well. It does brighten the skin, the finishing is semi-matte so it looks healthy, but it does transfer a bit sometimes. Still, I see less makeup on a mask than normally (since in Poland you still have to wear a mask when you visit a hospital). I enjoy it, and I believe I'll give Clio a chance more often.
